with Rob McNeilly
There have been many theories and explanations of what was central to Erickson's approach, including the use of complex language patterns, paradoxes, stories, strategies, humour, ordeals ... there are as many as there are authors.
But ... what are the core principles of his approach? Let's return to the source.
Erickson said that the 3 most important things we can do are "To observe, to observe and to observe".
He invite us to "Accept whatever a client brings and utilise it".
This can seem simple enough ... and sometimes it's easy for use to accept who a client is and how they are ... and sometimes our judgements and moral principles can create a challenge.
In this programme we will explore how we can genuinely accept a client and what they bring, without having to agree with it, like it, condone it, or compromise our ethical integrity. This process can take practice, and we can learn best when there is an opportunity to play, get it wrong, and adjust our responses.
The principle of utilisation can sometimes be obvious, while other times it can seem impossible.
Designing strategies can be such a delightful experience by helping to soften rigid patters and allowing preferred alternative to appear.
Hypnotic language can generate a respective invitations rather than sets of suggestions so clients can regain their own authorship.
In this programme we will explore a multitude of ways to identify opportunities to utilise each client's unique potential, again though play in a safe, non-judgemental environment.
Learning these core principles - accepting and utilising, designing strategies and hypnotic language - allows us to shift our work from diagnosing a condition then treating IT to focusing on each individual client and their latent abilities.
Perhaps surprisingly, the online video environment, particularly with breakout rooms, does just that!
People from different countries can meet face to face online and practice as if they are in the same room. It's a delight ... and people appreciate it ... and it leads to solid confidence - the confidence that comes from recurrent practice, not just memorising something and hoping to get away with it.
Topics will include
- accepting without agreeing
- maintaining our ethical integrity
- exploring the benefits of utilisation
- developing flexibilities to identify hidden benefits
- individualising the utilisation process to fit each unique client
- designing strategies
- exploring hypnotic language
- other concerns as they arise
I had the rare privilege of learning from Milton Erickson MD himself towards the end of his life and was inspired to teach my version of what I learnt from him over the last 35 years in Australia, Singapore, Tokyo, Denmark, Brazil, Finland, UK, Ireland, Czech Republic, USA and increasingly, online.
I promise that participation in this programme will give you a solid foundation, a respectful and effective context.
It would be a pleasure to have your company.
Rob.
